Why you need: Flaxseed

6 Apr

flaxseeds/ LINSEED

Unless you’ve  been living under a rock, you’ll know that the world has been obsessed with seeds lately. Chocolate chips have been replaced with pumpkin seeds in our morning muffins and chia seeds are fastly becoming just as popular as fruit when it comes to what to put in our smoothies. One particular seed that I’ve been using a lot of lately is the Flaxseed. Flaxseed also known as linseed is a great source of soluble fibre that has a multitude of health benefits. Here are just a few for you to ponder on:

  • Lowering unhealthy cholesterol in the blood.
  • Prevention against cancer; prostate, colon and breast.
  • Decreases the risk of hot flushes in post-menopausal women.
  • Helps balance blood sugar levels
  •  Acts as a hunger suppressant.
  •  High in omega-3 fatty acids which can lower undesirable fats in the blood which in turn reduces the risk of stroke and heart disease.
  • Very beneficial to the eyes, joints and brain health.
  • Brilliant source of omega-3 for vegetarians like myself :)

Now that we’ve established that you definitely need these chaps in your life, we should probably address the question of how? Well, no worries because flaxseeds are easily incorporated in your daily diet! When ground up, its very tasty sprinkled in yoghurt, porridge, cereals, smoothies, stews, casseroles and baked goods.

I use flaxseeds every day in my porridge or my granola. I’ve also tried it sprinkled in my salads and even in chunky veg & bean soup. All was delicious!

If I haven’t convinced you, here are some nifty links to a few sites where you’ll find some very tempting recipes using (yes, you’ve guessed it!) our new friend flaxseed!

Nowadays, flaxseeds are much more easily attainable. You can buy them on their own or mixed with other ingredients relatively cheaply from most supermarkets and health food shops.

At the risk of sounding just like your Mammy, EAT THEM! They’re good for ya!

Have you tried flaxseeds yet? If so, how do you incorporate them in your meals?

My current favourites :)

2 Apr

Yikes! I’ve been poor at keeping up with the whole monthly favourites jazz that other blogs seem to do so effortlessly. The reality is that sometimes I just don’t have enough interesting favourites to share, so why bore you with the same products over and over again?

Recently however, I have been trying and testing a few new bad boys and thought I’d show y’all a few of my top picks.

March current favourites

1) The Body Shop Special Edition Blueberry Range: Okay, nobody can deny that pretty much EVERYTHING in The Body Shop smells bloody amazing, but there’s  just something about the Special Edition Blueberry range that has me smitten. Hovering between being both sweet and fruity, its the perfect spring scent. I’ve been applying the body butter every night and the shower gel has made my morning time so much better. All Hail The Body Shop.. they can really do no wrong!

The Body Shop Special Edition Body Butter

2) Clinique High Impact Extreme Mascara in Black: Comparable to Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara, this baby is amazing at giving you very false lash-looking lashes. Big on volume and big on length, it’s pretty much everything you’d need in a mascara. I love the ball-shaped bottom of the brush which is so handy at getting into those pesky inner lashes. The only downside is that it’s pretty stubborn to remove, so you will need a good quality make-up remover.

Clinique High Impact Extreme Mascara

3) The Body Shop Honey Bronzer in shade 01 Light Matte: For a long time, I’ve had my share of fair-skinned lassie’s woes! Bronzer is a very tricky thing to get right when you are pale and as much as I love my Nars Laguna… it just doesn’t work on a day to day basis. I actually read about this bronzer recently on my favourite blogger EssieButton’s blog and seeing as she’s fair skinned like moi, I knew I’d have to give it a go ..Boy am I glad I did! It’s perfect for contouring and it’s just the right shade to dust all over the face for a nice sun-kissed look.

The Body Shop Honey Bronzer

4) Soap & Glory Trick and Treatment under eye concealer: One too many late nights watching re-runs of Girls  have left my under-eye area looking a little worse for wear. This concealer is not a newbie in my collection but rather something I’ve found myself gravitating back towards. My collection concealer is perfect for blemishes but it’s just a tad too heavy for under my eyes. This Soap & Glory offering however, is light but has enough coverage to banish my dark circles. It also lasts throughout the day and doesn’t cause any creasing issues!

Soap & Glory Trick or Treatment concealer

5) Umberto Giannini Glam Hair Backcomb in a Bottle: Since going for the chop, I’ve been avoiding my hair looking limp and lifeless like the plague. My hair is naturally fine and when straightened, it tends to just lie there looking meh. I’ve tried plumping powders in the past but nothing has worked as well as this dry spray. Just a tiny bit adds enough grit and texture that helps my hair look voluminous AND it smells great too!

Umberto Giannini Glam Hair Backcomb in a Bottle

6) Champneys Citrus Blossom Hand cream: I somehow feel as if I am cheating on my good ol’ reliable Soap & Glory Handfood, and while I still do carry some with me everywhere, I do have to admit that I have been loving another hand cream too. I bought this one on a whim during one of my regular trips to Boots. It smells almost too good and is the perfect size to keep beside my bed. It reminds me to apply it before bed so that my hands are all lovely in the morning. Ahh it’s the little things in life…

Champneys Citrus Blossom handcream

7)  OPI Nail Envy: Speaking of lovely hands… something else I’ve been trying to make lovely, are my nails. Recently, I’ve been quite negligent in my nail care and have been lazy with the base coat application…eeeek. My nails were stained and were weak so I needed something stat! Luckily I always have my trusty OPI Nail Envy not too far away and even after just one week of using it, I’ve seen a vast improvement. You use it just like a clear nail varnish but make sure you apply it once a day for a bout a fortnight to ensure a really thorough treatment. I’ve used this product for years and I’ve never been disappointed. It really is a wonder product!

The Sunday Post: Putting a little Spring in my step :)

23 Mar
Source: Pinterest

Source: Pinterest

While Spring in Ireland is rather a figure of speech rather than a certainty, it’s pretty hard to drag ourselves away from the cosy winter routine. I, for one, was getting far too comfortable in my onesies and snoods but I’ve finally decided to embrace Spring…even if it really has yet to “sprung”!

1) Beauty: First up I’ve been trying out some new Spring make-up trends, I’ve been bringing the 90′s blue eyeliner trend back in a big way for the past while, and I’ve been really diggin’ it (excuse the 90′s dodge slang). I already have blue eyes but I feel the blue liner just makes my eyes look more fresh and awake and it looks great with a bright lip ( try with MAC’s Lady Danger as in pic below!)  My blue eyeliner of choice has been Rimmel’s Scandeleyes Waterproof Khol Khaja in 014 Bright Blue which glides on very and lasts all day without smudging!  Hurrah!

Eyes: Rimmel Scandaleyes in Bright Blue Lips: MAC Lady Danger Cheeks: MAC Peaches

Those who aren’t quite ready for the coloured eyeliner, I’ve also been reaching for brighter nail polish shades which is a much more subtle way to add spring into your wardrobe. In my last post, I went through some of my favourite shades so I won’t bore you again in this one, here’s the link instead:http://sleepingbootay.com/2014/03/04/springtime-nails/

Springtime nails colour wheel

2) Food: Secondly, I’ve been trying to prise my hands away from my ol’ winter favourite: The Hot Chocolate. You’d think after a solid 4 months of drinking them several (Ok, pretty much every second day) times a week, I’d be getting tired of them, but NOPE! While I won’t deprive myself of them for good, I am trying to switch things up and try some fresher lighter drinks. I recently bought myself a new blender, and I’ve found myself staying up quite late some nights trying to come up with new smoothie ideas. Smoothies are a great breakfast or snack that are insanely healthy and keep you full. My personal favourite at the moment has been my Berry & Banana combo. *drools at the thought*

Berry and Banana Smoothie Recipe

  • Handful of mixed frozen berries (much cheaper than fresh berries)
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • Greek yogurt or any non-flavoured natural yogurt
  • Honey; I’ve chosen Manuka Honey for its’ extra health benefits
  • Flaxseed ( You can get so many different variations, I’ve chosen mine with added goji berries)
  • Spinach; frozen or fresh; just a handful of this in your smoothie will add iron and you won’t even know its there!
  • Half a cup of water, to stop it from getting too gloopy.

Blend all of these together and you are left with a glass of heaven. Now that I’m the depths of my smoothie-making frenzy,I’m looking for new ideas/recipes all the time.. so please share yours with me in the comments below!

3) Decor: My apartment over the winter had pretty much become my cave of cosiness. I spent 95% of my home-time, wrapped up in layers in my bed and paid little, if any attention to the decor. Now that I’ve embraced Spring however, I’ve decided to add a few little pieces to give the place a little pick me up. One of the easiest ways to do this I’ve found is to add some flowers… cause I mean, who doesn’t like flowers?! I’m usually a loyal Sunflower gal, but there’s an unwritten rule that Spring= Daffodils and I have to admit they are pretty lovely. I picked this wee bunch up very cheaply in my local Lidl…and I’m slowly counting down the days until I somehow manage to kill them! (ha!) Until then, they are doing a great job at keeping my apartment and myself chirpy!

Daffodils in Spring

Wel that’s pretty much it for my recipe for Spring! I would love to hear what kind of things you do to get yourself ready for Spring! Leave your ideas and any inputs in a comment below! :)

Until then I leave you with this strange but true offering from Pinterest:

My Cup of Tea…

2 Mar

Anyone who has ever encountered me will probably know that I am a huge Tea fiend. While I will always remain faithful to my trusty Lyons.. every now and again, I like to dabble in something a little bit more interesting. Herbal teas, known for their links with weight loss and incredible skin benefits, have increased in popularity over the past few years. I thought it might be helpful to share a short guide to Herbal Teas, which are my favourites and when I like to drink each type. If you are a coffee lover, LOOK AWAY NOW!

Herbal Tea

Morning time: I like something zingy in the morning, and since I can’t really have coffee due to stomach issues, for me, Green Tea & Lemon is the next best thing. Kick starts your metabolism, cleanses your system and makes you feel all fresh.

Mealtimes: Peppermint is fabulous to have right after a big feed. Soothes your stomach… and gets you ready for dessert… just kidding(ish). It’s also great for any sort of tummy ache or any upset stomach. So

Bedtime: Chamomile is known for its calming properties and can be really great when you want to unwind after a long day. I find a cup of this before bed, does the job. This is also great for any fellow stress-heads out there, I tend to keep a few bags of these in my handbag… call me crazy!

Dieting: Got those god-awful cravings for a pack of haribo? Why not try a fruit tea? It will give you that sweet kick but without the sugar. My personal favourite is Blueberry and Acai!

Tea time

I mentioned it in my Christmas gift guide but Tea Pigs ( http://www.teapigs.co.uk/) would be a great place to browse if you’d like to try something new. But if you are starting off, your local supermarket will most likely stock all the basics to kickstart.

What is your favourite herbal tea? Let me know in the comments below! :)

New Product Alert: Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water

21 Feb

I’m pretty much Miss Lazy when it comes to changing up my skincare routine. I tend to stick with a product, once I know that it works for me, in the fear of aggravating my already pretty moody skin. HOWEVER, when a gal spots a possible dupe along the skincare aisles of Boots… she just cannot say no!

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water

I’ve used Bioderma for quite a while now and I will admit that while it’s a really great product, it’s also a pain in the bootay to get my hands on. From topping up my PayPal account, surfing eBay and waiting patiently for the Postman month to month, I was more than ready to find a more readily available product.

*Enters Garnier.*

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water

Yes, when it comes down to basics, micellar waters are pretty much just glorified cleansing water but.. with added magical powers. Pretty much one soaked cotton pad will banish your make-up for the night. It’s a non-rinse, fragrance-free, hassle free make-up remover. You get 400ml in each bottle (bargain!) which claims to give you 200 uses… not so sure about that yet, but so far so good!  My face feels squeaky clean after use but not dry and it’s also fragrance free so no nasties on my sensitive skin. While it does the job on cleaning your mug, it’s not to be used in place of your normal cleanser. It is a make-up remover but you will still need to cleanse and moisturise your face afterwards. Ha, no shortcuts ladies…

This product retails for about €6 and can now be found in most pharmacies nationwide. If you are in the market for an affordable and fuss-free make-up remover, then Garnier has got you covered.

Sorry Bioderma, but you just got SERVED!

The Sunday Lustlist #7 (Beauty Edition)

16 Feb

Sunday's lustlist cover photo

Woah, it’s been awhile since I’ve done one of these guys, but January was not a great month for spending and somehow I’m STILL feeling the burn in February,  so instead there’s just been a lot of lusting. Here’s what I have had my eyes on recently from some of my favourite Beauty online stores:

1)Guerlain Terracotta Light Bronzing Powder:

http://www.feelunique.com/p/Guerlain-Terracotta-Light-Sheer-Bronzing-Powder-10g

GUERLAIN Terracotta Light Sheer Bronzing Powder 10g - feelunique

Ladies, just feast your eyes on that beauty. Some evenings, I spend literally 10 mins just gazing online at its’ wonderment! I’m not even a bronzer kinda gal, but I feel like my life is missing something the more I don’t have this in my life! It’s quite expensive but the best things are….right?!

2) Jouer Cosmetics Lumizing Moisture Tint:

http://www.cultbeauty.co.uk/make-up/jouer-cosmetics-luminizing-moisture-tint-1.html

Jouer Cosmetics _ Luminizing Moisture Tint _ Cult Beauty

Ever since my recent venture into the “Bare Minerals” world (review coming soon!), I’ve been all about the au natural look when it comes to my base. Spring is pretty much upon us, and I’ve started having an urge for a tinted moisturiser. I’ve heard through the blogging grapevine, that this bad boy offers just the right amount of coverage and the perfect glowy look without looking too shiny. I’m dying to see if the reviews are right…

3) Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz

Anastasia Beverly Hills _ Brow Wiz _ Cult Beauty

If I had a nickle for every time I heard a great review about this product, I’d be writing this blog post from my very own private jet. Okay, not quite, but my point is, that I’ve literally not heard one single bad word about this brow product. I’m a huge fan of brows, it’s my favourite part of my make-up routine and I love to try out any new products on the market. This is definitely a cult buy and it’s inevitable that it will soon be a new member of my make-up stash.

4) thebalm Mary-Lou-Manizer Highlighter:

Mary Lou Manizer Highlighter

Sometimes, even the most matte-loving gal needs a little sparkle and ever since I heard my favourite blogger Estee from EssieButton raving about this bad boy on her blog, I’ve been lusting after it. It always looks AW-MAZING whenever she wears it and I’m a sucker for their cute vintage packaging.  I’m not even a really highlighter kinda girl, but I’m sold on this one. *takes out Visa card slowly*

5) The Body Shop Special Edition Blueberry Body Butter:

BLUEBERRY BODY BUTTER

Words cannot get through how much I adore blueberries. I would eat them absolutely every day for every meal if I could. When I saw that the Body Shop have brought out a Special Edition Blueberry range, I couldn’t be anything but all over it. I pretty much want it all but how could I resist the classic body butter?! I look forward to smelling myself in this in the future… in a non-weird way of course…

6) Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush:

http://www.sephora.com/amazonian-clay-12-hour-blush-P278610

Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush - Tarte _ Sephora

NO, I don’t even have a specific colour that I want, because YES, I want them all! It kills me inside that I can’t physically get my hands on the beauty that is Tarte Amazonian Clay products. Every review that I read, my craving builds, especially for the ever popular 12-hour clay blush range. They are naturally made, come in amazing shades and the packaging is stunning. Tarte PLEASE COME TO IRELAND!!!

7) Sachajuan Overnight Hair Repair:

I love the idea of products that do all the work for you, especially when you’re catching some shut-eye. This hair product will go great with my Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight mask. Now all I need is a product that will do all my exercising for me, while I sleep as well… Hmmm…

So that’s all for this weeks Sunday Lustlist, I hope I got your beauty senses tingling with few of my picks.

I’d love to know what products have been on your Lustlists recently, leave them in a comment below, I’m nosey!

W7 “In the Buff” palette – A drugstore Naked palette dupe?

11 Feb

The world is still pretty much in a Naked palette frenzy and I don’t think that’s about to change any time soon. Everyone and their neighbours’ nan seems to have their hands on one of them and rightly so, but for those looking to save their pennies on a waaaay cheaper similar palette, I think I might have the solution for you!

Recently, my boyfriend’s sister, very kindly bought the W7 In the Buff palette for me. I’ve been coveting this bad boy for yonks now but since receiving the Naked palettes, I had completely forgotten all about it. For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been putting this palette to every beauty blogger test and here is what I have found.

W7 In the Buff eyeshadow palette

On first glance, the palettes themselves are all very similar. With neaaarly identical packaging to the Naked 3, the untrained eye wouldn’t know the difference.Like the Naked 2 & 3 palette it’s easy to keep clean and looks pretty chic on your beauty table or in your handbag.

w7 In the Buff eyeshadow palette

Colour range wise, I feel the shades are very likeable to the Naked 1 palette ranging from classic nudes to smokey dark hues. It’s a very wearable palette which would be useful in creating a multitude of eye looks.Colour pay-off is good for the price but I will be honest and say that they aren’t quite on par with the Naked palettes. The same goes for the texture, the W7 shadows are much more powdery while the “Nakeds” have that much sought after buttery feel.

{Left} Urban Decay Naked 3: Trick {Right} W7 shade (fourth from left)

{Left} Urban Decay Naked 3: Trick {Right} W7 shade (fourth from left)

{Left} Urban Decay Naked 1 in "Hustle" {Right} W7 second last shade on the right

{Left} Urban Decay Naked 1 in “Hustle” {Right} W7 second last shade on the right

The brush which is included in the W7 is useless and pretty standard for your typical drug store-bought palettes so, you will definitely want to swap it with a better quality brush. I use some of my Real Techniques brushes from the Eye Starter Kit. The difference in price is huge with the W7 palette coming in at less than a tenner while the Naked palettes come in at in and around €44.

w7 In the buff palette and Urban Decay Naked palettes

For me, the W7 palette is the perfect “starter kit”; great for beginners, girls who are still unsure if the Naked palette is for them, those who are on a budget or for peeps looking for inexpensive make-up to bring to festivals etc.

I would still highly recommend the Naked palettes to everyone till the day I die, but I have to say that the W7 palette is a pretty darn impressive dupe! If you are looking to create a very Naked-esque eye looks at a portion of the price then the W7 In the Buff is for you.

A quick cuppa and a catch-up…

10 Feb

Phew, the last month has gone by so quickly  in a blur of work, sleep, work, sleep. Sometimes, with all the beauty chatter on here, I forget to check in with y’all. No fear, my usual make-up chit chat will proceed as normal but for now, I thought I’d grab a mug of tea and do a quick catch up.

Tea, chats and blogging

So, what’s new with me this week?

Hair: So lately, I’ve been trying out a centre parting. Still not entirely sure what to make of it. I’m teetering between looking like either one of the Kardashians or a serial killer, but overall, I’m really enjoying a break from my classic “side-fringe” which I’ve had for too long now. What do you guys think?

Short hair w/ centre parting

Make-up: The past week or two have been big for me as I’ve gone minimalistic all the way when it comes to make-up .This was the week, I embarked on my Bare Minerals foundation journey and boy was it a right turn! I’m really enjoying the no-make-up-feel and the au-natural look. Of course, I still have my higher coverage liquid foundations stashed away for emergencies but for now I’m happy out!

T.v: I’m just gonna put it out there but I’ve been obsessing over Honey Boo Boo. It’s a sick addiction but I love it. I’ve never wanted to be Southern so much in my dayum life. ” It is what it is”. I’m not ashamed to say that I’ve watched 7 episodes in a row and it’s highly likely that I’ll watch one once I’ve finished this post.  It’s pretty much the definition of #sorrynotsorry.

Books: I started reading the book “Philomena”. I’m not even really a cry-er but I’m only on Chapter 3 and I’ve nearly blubbed twice already. Dying to see the film now.. …pass the tissues!!

Philomena

Fashion: I recently ordered this shirt from Romwe and I’m smitten. I’m really into crazy prints at the moment and I haven’t seen a shirt like this anywhere yet. Apart from that I’ve pretty much been swooning over the entire Zara collection online every night…but then again, what’s new?!

Food: Eating breakfast for dinner has become a routine recently. Due to part-laziness/part-immaturity, I’ve been really enjoying a mixture of tea and toast and some of my favourite childhood cereals (three whoops for Cheerios!) just before bedtime these days.

Banana Pancakes

Now, enough about me, what’s been new with all you lovely people?

Waxperts Ingrown Hair Pads Review!

4 Feb

I’m sure you are all familiar with the painful razor burn, the wax rash or that stubborn stubble that will not shift. The beauty world, isn’t always so glamorous and sometimes we need a hero product to battle our beauty woes.

*Enters Waxperts.*

IWaxperts Ingrown Hair Pads

I have ridiculously sensitive skin which is not fond of any sort of hair removal. The majority of the time, I am left with annoying ingrown hairs that can actually become quite painful. I’ve tried all sorts of products and even some home remedies (eek) but none of them have battled the problem. I was recently very kindly sent Waxperts to try out. I have been using them for over 2 weeks now and I’m very impressed. Not only do they  help to get rid of ingrown hairs, they can be used to battle a multitude of beauty sins. It has been known to be great at treating Keratosis Pilaris (those pesky red bumps on the backs of your arms), acne and keeps your skin super smooth.

Waxperts Ingrown Hair Pads

But what makes them work, you might say? Well, these pads contain 3 key ingredients that work together at treating, healing and preventing your skin after you shave or wax.

  1.  Salicylic acid which works as an exfoliator, causing the skin cells to shed more readily, opening clogged pores and neutralizing bacteria within, preventing pores from clogging up again.
  2. Rosemary which has anti-inflammatory properties and
  3. Panthenol which improves hydration and stops the skin becoming itchy or inflamed.

Waxperts Ingrown Hair Pads

The pads are easy peasy to use, simply rub the pad over the area that needs treatment each day. I tend to do this before my shower, but it’s really down to you!

Other helpful tips I find great at keeping ingrown hairs at bay are:

  • Always use a sharp razor
  • exfoliate with a good scrub at least once a week
  • use a body brush before you shower to stimulate the hair follicles
  • and lastly use the Waxperts pads.

The tub contains 40 pads at a mere €7.99 and can be found in over 300 salons nationwide or directly from their salon in Dun Laoghaire by phoning 01-2140757 or by e-mailing: info@waxpertswax.com. It will be launching in pharmacies soon too so keep your peepers peeled for that!

I honestly don’t know what I did before Waxperts, thank you for coming into my life!

*bows down*
