Billion Dollar Brows Brow Gel; My thoughts

13 Aug

Billion Dollar brows brow gel

Brows are my favourite part of my make-up routine and I am a firm believer that they really do make or break a look. With the big eyebrow trend getting bigger and bigger, we are all in need of something to keep those bad boys in line!

*Enters brow gel*

I will admit, that for years, I used to shun brow gel as an unnecessary/ time consuming step in my already exhaustive routine. HOWEVER, having being the victim of dishevelled eyebrows once or twice is enough to have you bowing down to the stuff in no time!

Billion Dollar Brows brow gel review

Recently, I was very lucky to be sent Billion Dollar Brow’s new brow gel to try out and let’s just say I was aalll over this like a bad rash! The brow gel is clear, doesn’t flake and dries instantly which is great as I’m not a huge fan of that wet brow feeling. *ick*  Crispy brows is also not good look, but this gel leaves yours looking and feeling on the right side of set. The brush is precise and makes it easy to glide across your brows in one easy swipe. The gel itself is very effective and your brow hairs will not budge until you remove your make-up later on!

Billion Dollar Brow Brow Gel review

Overall, I could find no fault in this product. While it didn’t exactly make me look like Cara Delevinge, I’ll settle for just having great brows like her for now! ;)

If I’ve tempted you, this product retails at  23.95 and can be found online and at leading beauty salons nationwide.

Beauty Jibber Jabber Explained #3

11 Aug

Sleepingbootays beauty jibber jabber

Learning caps at the ready gals and prepare to get beauty-term savvy with my third (mini) instalment of “Beauty Jibber Jabber Explained”

1) Peptides: Peptides are little protein molecules that have an ability to change the way skin cells operate. They encourage skin cells to increase circulation or produce more collagen naturally, among other things.

2) Silicone: This is a smoothing ingredient, added to products to aid the skin in retaining moisture.

3) Essential Oils: In its most basic definition, an essential oil is a liquid that is distilled from the parts (leaves, stem, flower, etc.) of a plant. A flower actually gets its scent from what eventually becomes an essential oil. What’s even more confusing is that they aren’t even oil-y but in fact quite watery in their texture!

4) Alpha Hydroxy Acids: Organic elements that improve skin tone by clearing dead skin cells and lightening spots (Glycolic acid and Lactic acid are most common)

5) Beta Hydroxy Acids: Also help shed dead skin cells and serves as an anti-inflammatory agent (salicylic acid and ascorbic acid are most common)

6) Natural v Organic“natural” ingredients are derived, in whole or in part, from natural sources with no synthetic compounds. “organic” ingredients are supposed to contain only plant-sourced ingredients that are cultivated without the use of synthetic chemicals, irradiation, or pesticides.  ( Watch this space for more on this topic soon)

Okay guys, that’s it for my third batch of Beauty Jibber Jabber Explained, if you liked this post and would like to see more, make sure to comment below this post!

Until then, CLASS DISMISSED!

Unsung Heroes of the beauty world

10 Aug

unsung heroes of the beauty world

I like to call them Shhhush products: un-glamorous products that save us daily but yet are hidden from the limelight. We talk about lip-balms, nail polish and mascaras as often as the weather but when it comes to the products that do the nitty gritty there’s nothing to be heard. Well, NO MORE! Today, we are going to give praise to these products; our unsung heroes.

un-glamorous beauty products

Razors- Some like to wax, some laser, but I’m fond of the good ol fashioned shaving. My hair removal weapon of choice has been always the Gilette Venus range with the Olay colab version being my personal favourite. They have an inbuilt Olay conditioning strip which helps my sensitive skin from getting too aggravated and a flexible head which limits the chance of getting those darn knicks! *shakes fist*. Gillette also do a great range of shaving foams which work great at prepping the skin for shaving and actually make the process that little bit easier.

Gilette Venus Razor with Olay

Tweezers: Keeping with the de-fuzzing theme, tweezers are something that I always have nearby. From keeping my eyebrows looking tame between threading sessions to applying false lashes they are incredibly useful. Tweezerman are always a good place to start if you are looking to invest in a good pair but I’ve been using these bad boys sent to me by HD brows and I’m very pleased with them.

HD Brows Tweezers

Foot Creams: What is it about feet that has even the chattiest of bloggers staying shtum? Feet need love too. Besides painting your toe nails, to keep your feet looking their best, you need to keep hard skin at bay. Soap & Glory’s Heel genius is brilliant. I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned it before but it smells lovely and fresh and the packaging is cute so you can showcase it on your beauty shelves without the shame!

Soap & Glory Heel Genius

Deodorant: We all like to pretend that our shizz don’t stank, but lets get real here.. even beyonce wears deodorant so why are we so shy to talk about it. Whether you like spray, liquid or stick, there are so many types on sale these days that can keep your pit regions from being the pits (geddit?!) I’ve dabbled from all types of deodorants in my lifetime and have failed to remain loyal to any particular brand, however I do like Mitchum’s Ultimate 48 hour protection range.. strong, pleasantly scented but not harsh on my sensitive skin and simply does the job!

Mitchum Ultimate deodorant

Three cheers for the products that do the dirty work and make our lives that little bit easier.

What un-glam products do you use regularly and love?

Maxfactor Face Finity All Day Primer; Yay or Nay?

2 Aug

....with glittery flying pigs... just because

….with glittery flying pigs… just because

I don’t know about you, but as a beauty blogger, I am so sick and tired of products not living up to their promises. I’ve used so many primers in the past that have just been “meh” and with their effects lasting only a couple of hours. On the verge of giving up, I decided to try one last time when I picked up the new Maxfactor primer. Even though my expectations have been crushed so many times, with this bad boy, they were met at last!

I would describe this little’ un as a primer for all. It’s not too matte, nor is it dewy so I feel it’s suitable for any skin type. There’s also no scent so perfect for anyone with sensitivity. The product itself sinks in straight away and acts almost like a glue under your foundation without the yucky stickiness.

Maxfactor Face Finity All Day Primer swatch

It has a lovely smoothing effect on your skin but if you are looking for a pore minimiser, you’ll need to look elsewhere. I found that this primer worked with nearly all foundation types but I preferred it best under my liquid foundations. You literally only need the smallest amount, which I apply using my fingers.

This product by no means will blow you away, but its a good honest working primer which will keep your foundation on all day.. and that’s the least a girl could ask for eh?

Bravo Maxfactor, Bravo!

Ps: The primer retails for around 13 yo yos and can be found in most good pharmacies and Maxfactor stockists nationwide. G’wan and treat yourself! ;)

The Pixi Glow Tonic; My thoughts!

1 Aug

I know I’m not the only one, who, after strenuously double cleansing (I blame you Caroline Hirons), lazily “forgets” the toner stage of their skin care regime. Not only does it involve effort but toners are pretty much boring in general and I often feel as if they really aren’t really doing anything at all for my skin!

IMG_20140801_130700

This year however, we’ve heard a lot about ex-foliating toners and their benefits for our skin. Desperate to finally jump on the toner bandwagon, I began my research on the best toners out there. The Pixi glow tonic is a best selling product ranted and raved about in the blogosphere but the only downside is that it’s still pretty hard to get your hands on due to such a high demand. SO, on a recent trip to London, I hunted down the Pixi HQ and got my paws on my very own bottle and the experimenting began…

The packaging has changed recently from the pump to a more travel friendly bottle but the formula is still the same. Made from lovely stuff like aloe vera, ginseng and witch hazel … the ingredients are natural and kind to even my fickle sensitive skin. While there is a scent, the product hasn’t irritated my skin one bit and I find its gentle enough for me to use both morning and evening. Just a quick swipe using a cotton pad, all over your face, and you’re done! Ex-foliated and toned in one simple step!

Unfortunately its still quite hard to get your hands on it in Ireland so I’m afraid its internet shopping all the way. This magical formula retails for about  20 yo yos and then p&p depending on where you live.

If I have intrigued you about toners, the skincare QUEEN Caroline Hirons has written a fabulously informative blog post all about the shizz!  Which I will link you to, because I’m lovely like that :

http://www.carolinehirons.com/2012/11/pixi-glow-tonic-p50-dupe.html and http://www.carolinehirons.com/2010/08/beauty-mouth-basics-toner.html

The verdict?  My complexion is still a far cry from perfect but I have noticed that the pigmentation in my skin has reduced and its’ definitely smoother in appearance and to touch. The excitement revolved around this product is well and truly justified in this case and my only problem is trying to restrain myself from ordering more already!

…Oh the satisfaction a beauty blogger feels when a product lives up to its hype.

Psssst….I’m still here!

L’oreal Lumi Magique Touch of Light Highlighting Pen

5 May L'oreal Lumi Magique Touch of Light Highlighter Pen

*Phew, well if anything it certainly wins top points for the longest name*

I can thank copious amounts of late night episodes of Modern Family lately for some rather unwelcome dark circles and bags under my eyes. While my good ol’ reliable Soap & Glory Trick or Treatment under-eye concealer usually does the job itself on a daily basis, lately it just hasn’t been cutting it! I’d heard great things in the blogging world about L’oreal’s newest highlighting tool and the beauty addict in me just couldn’t hold back.

L'oreal Lumi Magique Touch of Light Highlighter Pen

Very similar to the cult classic, the infamous YSL Touche Eclat but with a slightly more friendly price-tag the highlighter comes in a “clicky pen” which I’m usually not a massive fan of,  as I find that I never get just the right amount of product. I will turn a blind eye however as the brush is soft and gentle on my sensitive skin and the small nib-end proves competent for getting  into even the weeniest corners of your eye area.

L'oreal Lumi Magique Touch of Light Highlight Pen

To use, apply in a v-shape underneath the eye (see above) and blend in, with either a small tapered blending brush or lightly with your ring finger. I also like to use a small dab of this on my brow bone and in the corner of my tear-duct to brighten the eyes further.

L'oreal Lumi Magique Touch of Light Highlight Pen

What makes this product really impressive is that the formula is creamy and non-drying so it won’t stick to any dry patches or become flaky throughout the day. It blends beautifully into the skin and never looks cakey.

Something to bare in mind though is that this product is a highlighter, not a concealer. The coverage is average, so if your dark circles are bad, you may need to use this in conjunction with your own concealer.

Swatch of L'oreal Lumi Magique Touch of Light Highlight pen

Blended in

Blended in

The only downside I can really find, is that like most drug-store products unfortunately, the shade range is very poor, coming in only three; light, medium and dark. I use light which seems to work quite well for me once blended in carefully on top of my foundation. Take some time testing out the shades before you buy, as buying a shade too dark will end up worsening your dark circles rather than vanishing them.

Lumi Magique Touch of Light Highlighter Pen

Overall, this product is best for those looking to brighten up the eye area and giving you that much coveted “refreshed and awake” look that we all want but rarely have. Thanks a lot Netflix!

Still not sure if this bad boy is for you? Well, to top it all off, the rose gold packaging is pretty and looks swish in your make-up bag..when it comes to make-up, lets face it, appearance does matter ;)

This little golden wonder retails for just under €13 in most good pharmacies and selected L’oreal stockists worldwide. Now what are you waiting for….?

Collection’s “Work the colour” Eyebrow Kit

4 May

I don’t care what anybody says, eyebrows are by far one of the most important steps in any make-up routine and with statement brows still dominating the catwalks this season, everyone needs an eyebrow kit in their lives. This bargain beauty find has been a staple throughout my daily primping & preening and I just had to tell y’all about it!

Collection Work the collection Eyebrow kit

Collection has really up’d their game since their recent re-branding and their new “Work the Colour” eyebrow kit is no exception. I’ve used everything from MAC, Bobbi Brown and Benefit products on my brows and while they all do a lovely job they also come with a not so lovely price-tag. On a recent Boots trip, this kit caught my eye and at only €5.99, how could I say no?!

Collection's Work the Colour Eyebrow kit

Along with a built-in mirror, the palette comes with three super pigmented powders; light, medium and dark brown; which can all be easily blended to create a perfect match for your brows. The powders stay on all day without smudging or fading, which is a tall order for a budget brand and you won’t find the usual chalkiness that sometimes comes with cheaper brands.

Collection work the colour eyebrow kit

The kit also comes with a double-ended brush which is nothing to write home about but perfectly fine to use when you are on the go. (I use my Real Techniques angled eye-liner brush instead) The clear mascara that’s included however is a great addition as it helps to keep your newly defined brows in place without making them crispy or sticky *shudders*

Collection Work the colour eyebrow kit

I’ve liked the kit so much that I haven’t used anything else on them since I purchased it, now how a’BROWt that?! (Geddit?, heehee)

The kit was released last month and can be found in most pharmacies, supermarkets, drugstores worldwide!

Sleepingbootay Reviews: Bourjois Happy Light Matte Serum Primer

26 Apr

Bourjois Happy Light Matte Serum Primer

Gosh, it’s been donkey’s years since I’ve tried a Bourjois base product and I’m kicking myself for it now! On a whim recently in my local Boots, I picked up this primer in the hope it would solve my mid-day shiny face issue. I didn’t have a huge amount of faith as I have tried a handful of mattifying primers with not a whole amount of success. However, I’ve been testing this primer for about 2 weeks now and I can confirm that it works fabulously!

Pros:

  • Applies very smoothly to the face and sinks in instantly
  • Has quite a strong scent yet it didn’t break my ever so sensitive face out. Miracle?
  • Kept my face shine free for pretty much the entire day
  • Even though it has a matte formula it has a nice glowy effect on my skin.
  • Made my pores look significantly smaller
  • Has made my foundation last much longer as I need to use about half the amount that I was previously using!
  • Doesn’t leave the skin feeling tight or dehydrated as with a lot of primers
  • One shade suits all- hurrah!
  • Product is colour-free so it can be worn on its’ own or under foundation.
  • Love the packaging: small to keep in your make-up bag and has a pump so is economical and hygienic.

Cons:

  • This primer cost me just under €16 which is a little on the expensive side for a drugstore item. However, you do only use the teeniest bit so it will last you quite a while.
  • Unfortunatley, I don’t think this primer is stocked in every Boots store yet BUT it can be bought on their online store: http://www.boots.ie/en/Bourjois-Paris-Happy-Light-Matte-Serum-Primer_1388139/. Keep your peepers peeled for it in all major pharmacies, drugstores and department stores.

Thanks to this little tube of joy, I think I just might be…maybe… falling in love with Bourjois again. <3 Hmmm now what to try next?!

Have you tried this primer yet? What’s your favourite Bourjois product?

Why you need: Flaxseed

6 Apr

flaxseeds/ LINSEED

Unless you’ve  been living under a rock, you’ll know that the world has been obsessed with seeds lately. Chocolate chips have been replaced with pumpkin seeds in our morning muffins and chia seeds are fastly becoming just as popular as fruit when it comes to what to put in our smoothies. One particular seed that I’ve been using a lot of lately is the Flaxseed. Flaxseed also known as linseed is a great source of soluble fibre that has a multitude of health benefits. Here are just a few for you to ponder on:

  • Lowering unhealthy cholesterol in the blood.
  • Prevention against cancer; prostate, colon and breast.
  • Decreases the risk of hot flushes in post-menopausal women.
  • Helps balance blood sugar levels
  •  Acts as a hunger suppressant.
  •  High in omega-3 fatty acids which can lower undesirable fats in the blood which in turn reduces the risk of stroke and heart disease.
  • Very beneficial to the eyes, joints and brain health.
  • Brilliant source of omega-3 for vegetarians like myself :)

Now that we’ve established that you definitely need these chaps in your life, we should probably address the question of how? Well, no worries because flaxseeds are easily incorporated in your daily diet! When ground up, its very tasty sprinkled in yoghurt, porridge, cereals, smoothies, stews, casseroles and baked goods.

I use flaxseeds every day in my porridge or my granola. I’ve also tried it sprinkled in my salads and even in chunky veg & bean soup. All was delicious!

If I haven’t convinced you, here are some nifty links to a few sites where you’ll find some very tempting recipes using (yes, you’ve guessed it!) our new friend flaxseed!

http://www.healthyflax.com/flax-recipes/

http://www.pinterest.com/omegafieldss/recipes-with-flaxseed/

http://www.vegetariantimes.com/article/flaxseeds/

Nowadays, flaxseeds are much more easily attainable. You can buy them on their own or mixed with other ingredients relatively cheaply from most supermarkets and health food shops.

At the risk of sounding just like your Mammy, EAT THEM! They’re good for ya!

Have you tried flaxseeds yet? If so, how do you incorporate them in your meals?
